History of the Senate Resolution
Native Plant Resolution Background
2021 and 2022: Senator Rob Portman (R-OH) and Senator Mazie Hirono (D-HI) were the founding, bipartisan, cosponsors of a Senate Resolution to designate April 2021 as National Native Plant Month (S Res 109). In 2022, they continued their commitment to native plants by reintroducing the Senate Resolution making April 2022 National Native Plant Month (S Res 570).
2023 and 2024: With the retirement of Senator Portman, Senator Mike Braun (R-IN) kindly agreed to be the Republican cosponsor in 2023. With Senator Hirono as the lead sponsor, Senators Hirono and Braun were instrumental in designating April 2023 (S Res 152) and April 2024 (S Res 603) as National Native Plant Month!
2025: Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-MS) graciously agreed to be the lead sponsor of the bipartisan resolution in 2025, with lead cosponsor Senator Mazie Hirono (D-HI) (S Res 157). Supporting cosponsors included: Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ), Thomas Bryant Cotton (R-AR), Senator Jon Husted (R-OH), Senator Martin Heinrich (D-AZ), and Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR). Thank you all for your support!
Parallel House Resolution in 2023-2025
From 2023-2025, there was an effort to have a parallel resolution approved in the House of Representatives. It was introduced each year and supported by numerous cosponsors including: Rep Joe Neguse (D-CO), Rep Booker (D-NJ), Rep Cotton (R-AR), Rep Heinrich (D-OR), Rep Husted (R-OH), Rep Joyce (R-Oh), Rep Case (D-HI), Rep Buck (R-CO), Rep Darren Soto (D-FL), Rep James Moylan (R-Guam), and Rep Jill Tokuda (D-HI).
Unfortunately, the House no longer supports any resolutions. Starting in 2026 we will only be working with the Senate to renew this resolution.
